CHAPTER 18:
We had to get out of here. Now. I knew police would be looking for us and hopefully they would find us soon. But I had a sick feeling this wasn't going to be over quickly. I sang a little to paisley because she always relaxed more and could think better if she listened to music and right now, that's as close as we were going to get to music. After she calmed down a bit we decided to start figuring out where we were first. We started by touch. It was dirty, not just sitting on the ground but like a concrete floor that hadn't been cleaned in a long time. It was cold because of the heat-less concrete but the air was think and hot. Which is why we say basement. We knew there were stairs somewhere which meant a door but I'm assuming that it will be well locked so that is an almost impossible escape route. Next we wanted to figure out WHERE this house or shed was so we focused on smells and sounds. The ground was concrete but the walls felt like a thick wood. We sat there, just listening. We decided we are outside of a city due to the lack of cars and horns. Maybe in the woods because every so often you could get a smell of bark that would come down from the basement door. We could faintly hear the footsteps above us belonging to 3 or 4 different people. All girls I'm assuming. next we let our eyes adjust the best they could to the darkness that overwhelmed us. And that's when I saw it! A small window. No more than 10 inches high and 20 inches across. It had black paint dried over it from the inside letting only a small sparkle of lighting come through from a little corner the paint hadn't touched. Paisley and I decided that the best thing to do was reach up and scrape some of the paint away to the best of our abilities. It had bars that went across. 2 of them. As I scraped away the paint light flooded through allowing us to see some pine trees and birds flying around, It was almost 7 or 8 I assumed. We heard a noise so we quickly went back to the floor. "Well, well, well." A high pitched voice echoed. "Tonight might get a little cold so we were going to make a little fire for the monsters. Here's some Mc Donald's too. We wouldn't want our guests to be hungry now would we." Her laughs were accompanied by another girl next to her. She laid down a few logs ang lit a match causing the room to be illuminated by an orange glow. They left and shut the door behind them. We needed a plan but we were exhausted and needed food so we ate the sandwiches they so kindly provided. They were right about the cold though. An hour or 2 later the cold set in so we huddled around the flames. Paisley fell asleep first. she laid next to me. What did we get ourselves into? I was tired but I couldn't fall asleep. My mind was racing to fast for me to sleep. I watched the fire. The logs had burned down to embers from which wisps of flame rose, wavered then disappeared. When My eyes could no longer stay open, I let my body lie down though my mind didn't want to stop. I tossed and turned restlessly from side to side. my mind going faster and faster. trying to think of an escape route with no success. my mind only colliding with our problem again and again.like a man in a dream who couldn't find his key, circling a house, repeatedly trying to unlock each door and window with no success. We needed help. And we needed it soon.
